While searching for details on James M. Williams - brother of my third great grandfather, Henry Clay Williams - I found this 1850 census record for him in Portland Township, Ohio:
This shows him living with the Morgan family:
- Francis Morgan, 45, merchant
- S. Antonett Morgan, 39
- Frances W. Morgan, 14, in school
- Henry J. Morgan, 11, in school
- Jessie A. Morgan, 4
- Alexander C. Morgan, 11 months
- Mary Manser, 18, born in Germany (likely a servant)
- Dora Dutcher, 13, ditto
- James M. Williams, 19, clerk
- Edward M. Morgan, 47, banker
Portland was a small town which was absorbed into the city of Sandusky.
I wonder if James worked for either Francis or Edward Morgan, in addition to living with them.
I feel confident that this is our James Williams because I can connect these Morgan brothers to a Henry T. Morgan who was a Wall Street broker. After moving to New York City, James Williams worked at Henry Morgan's brokerage for several years. He then made an introduction for his brother Henry, who also worked there.
Francis, Edward, and Henry Morgan were all sons of Pamela Taylor and Archippus Morgan. (Yes, I checked for a connection to J. P. Morgan, and no, I did not find any.). This census record seems to show how our family first got to know this Morgan family.
